Guru, the leading force behind pioneering hip-hop outfit Gang Starr and the Jazzmatazz project, is reportedly in a coma after suffering a heart attack Sunday (February 28).

The 43-year-old rapper is to undergo surgery today (March 1). Guru’s Gang Starr partner DJ Premier confirmed the MC’s condition in a call to satellite radio program Hip Hop Nation, the Guardian reports.

Since the 2003 album The Ownerz, Gang Starr have kept a relatively low profile, going on an indefinite hiatus and only recently hinting of new material from the duo. Guru, born Keith Elam, released his last solo album Lost and Found in 2009, which followed up on 2007’s The Hip-Hop Jazz Messenger: Back to the Future from his jazz/hip-hop project Jazzmatazz.

It has been a tumultuous few years for jacksoul front-man, Haydain Neale. He made an amazing recovery from a serious traffic accident a couple years back and recently the band was in the process of releasing their first album in 3 years, SOULmate. Just over a week prior to the record's release, Haydain passed away this Sunday, November 22, in hospital after a private bout with Lung Cancer. His legacy lives on in the great experiences and memories he shared with fellow musicians and members of the music industry across Canada and around the world. Our condolences to his friends and family for this tragic loss. A little something to remember him by, here's a track that goes back over a decade, from jacksoul's debut album "Absolute"...
